Jo Smith

Jo is the Programme manager for Years 2 & 3 of the Bachelor of Therapeutic and Sports Massage (BTSM) and co-leads the New Zealand Massage Therapy Research Centre. Having previously developed the first Bachelor’s degree in massage therapy in the Southern hemisphere, she is now focusing on developing a culture of massage therapy research both within the BTSM and the New Zealand massage industry.

Her research focuses on the massage culture of care and practice patterns of massage therapy within New Zealand. In addition, she has carried out research into massage outcomes, massage professionalization and a number of educational issues pertinent to massage therapy.

Before becoming a massage educator and researcher, Jo worked as a massage therapist and physiotherapist.

Donna Smith

Donna is the Programme manager for Year 1 of the Bachelor of Therapeutic and Sports Massage (BTSM), the Certificate in Massage Therapy and co-leads the New Zealand Massage Therapy Research Centre. Donna is also an educator, who teaches on the Bachelor of Therapeutic and Sports Massage programme. Having completed a Bachelor of Therapeutic and Sports Massage and a Post Graduate Diploma in Tertiary Teaching, her recent research interests have focused on professionalism and perceptions of and barriers to degree-based massage therapy education. She is currently investigating the historical and contemporary aspects of mirimiri/massage therapy in New Zealand.

Todd Blair

Todd is a graduate of the Bachelor of Therapeutic and Sports Massage programme at Southern Institute of Technology. After completing his massage qualification, he engaged in massage clinical practice in Australia and New Zealand. Todd now teaches on a number of massage programmes at the Southern Institute of Technology and actively assists in a number of research projects being undertaken by the New Zealand Massage Therapy Research Centre.
